The General Practice is a commercial organisation owned by the self-employed GPs called GP contractors to generate maximum profits for themselves.

The GP contractors, constituting less than 50% of all the General Practice workforce, employ other doctors as salaried GPs and Advance Nurse Practitioners. They run the General Practice to maximise profit. Many work significantly less and make £300,000 to £700,000 annually.

The call centre NHS 111 providing this service has been considered a disaster by most people who have used it.

Out of 168 hours a week, the GPs are available only for 50 hours (Monday to Friday 8 am-6 pm). England is the only rich country in the world where for 118 hours a week, people are offered treatment by telephone only from a call centre, the NHS 111. An entire chapter in the book has been devoted to the misdemeanour of this organisation operated by ‘Health Advisers’ with no medical qualification and six weeks of training.

Only then will you find that the General Practice in England is one of the worst in the world for GP access.

If a charity asked for donations to help the people of a developing country because no medical attention is available without waiting for fourteen days and 70% of the time the treatment is available by telephone only, the people in England would give generously to the cause.

And yet, unknown to most, this is how the General Practice is available to us in our own country.

Unlike the hospital super-specialists, all that a GP needs to perform his duties is an eight square meters consulting room. Nothing more

Medical science has evolved to a bewildering series of new diagnosis, treatment and life-changing operative techniques. There are more than 60 disease-related specialities in England, and each speciality may have several sub-specialities, practised from the modern hospitals by the ‘super-specialists’. All these highly complex fields of medicines can only be delivered from hospitals equipped with sophisticated diagnostic facilities and operating theatres.

The speciality of the simple, ancient, noble, General Practice has not changed since the inception of the NHS in 1948, and for that matter, even 100 years before. All that a GP requires to offer the services is an eight-meter consulting room.

The NHS does not acknowledge that millions of people are daily suffering from pain, anguish and despair because the General Practice in England is one of the worst in the world for prompt GP access.

Research findings and communications exposed a horrific fact. NHS England, academics of Royal College of General Practioner, British Medical Association, GPs, Practice Managers, Practice Nurses do not consider waiting two weeks to have a GP appointment of any concern. Nor do the three health-related think tanks; Kings Fund, Health Foundation, Nuffield Trust.

Sadly, People’s suffering due to appalling GP access is of no interest to any of them. Their focus is internal; reviewing, academic analyses, seminars to help those working within the profession

To abolish the sham self-employed status of the GPs and pay them salaries like the other NHS doctors.

Let them deal with 30% of the medical problems only and let 70% of the matters related to mental health and muscle/bone/joint issues be dealt with by non GP professional .
